In 1973 Soylent Green took audiences into the future: the year 2022.
Things weren’t going so well.
Ecological disaster brought on by overpopulation, mass unemployment, an endless heatwave, and deepening inequality had taken hold, with no solution in sight, other than rations of a seemingly innocuous and mostly tasteless wafer — Soylent Green.
“Trust us, it’s made of plankton,” they said as the riot police stood by.
Starring Charlton Heston and marking screen legend Edward G. Robinson’s final film appearance, Soylent Green is a grimy and sweaty dystopian vision. It is a warning against the unchecked expansion of the human footprint on our still green earth. It’s also a murder mystery and a whole lot of fun.
Join us for an Earth Day celebration at the Senate as we team up with Greening of Detroit to present this 70s sci-fi classic. The world still has a whole lot green, but it’s up to us all to ensure that the science fiction of a dusty, crowded, and hopelessly brown world never becomes fact.
