Award-winning gay fiction authors Gar McVey-Russell, Trebor Healey and Jim Provenzano discuss writing about the past, and in contemporary settings, in an engaging talk, with short readings from their new and recent work.
Recipient of a Lambda Literary award, two Publishing Triangle awards and a Violet Quill award, Trebor Healey is the author of the novels; A Horse Named Sorrow, Faun and Through It Came Bright Colors, a poetry collection, Sweet Son of Pan, and three collections of stories, A Perfect Scar, Eros & Dust and Falling. He co-edited (with Marci Blackman) Beyond Definition: New Writing from Gay and Lesbian San Francisco and co-edited (with Amie Evans) Queer & Catholic. Trebor currently has two new novels in the works, and the long-awaited audiobook version of A Horse Named Sorrow will be available in June.
Gar McVey-Russell began writing early in life, but thought he wanted to be an astronomer. (He also thought he was straight. Go figure.) At UCLA, he co-created a left-leaning paper called Free Association. He also wrote commentaries for The Daily Bruin and feature articles for the LGBTQ newsmagazine Ten Percent, for which he received an award. Gar began fiction writing in the early 1990s. His work has appeared in Sojourner: Black Gay Voices in the Age of AIDS (1993), and other publications. His short story, "Tom of Boalt Hall," was a finalist in the Saints and Sinners LGBTQ Festival Fiction Open and appears in their 2020 anthology. Sin Against the Race (2017) is his first novel. Gar is married and lives in Oakland. And while he does not study the stars professionally, he does own a telescope and is an avid fan of Doctor Who and Star Trek.
Jim Provenzano is the author of the novella Lessons in Teenage Biology, the novels Finding Tulsa (Palm Drive Publishing), Now I’m Here (Beautiful Dreamer Press), the Lambda Literary Award-winning Every Time I Think of You, its sequel Message of Love (a Lambda Literary Award Finalist), the novels PINS, Monkey Suits, Cyclizen, the commissioned stage adaptation of PINS, and the short story collection Forty Wild Crushes. Audiobook adaptations include PINS (Paul Fleschner, narrator), Every Time I Think of You, and its sequel Message of Love (Michael Wetherbee, narrator). A journalist, editor, and photographer in LGBT media for more than three decades, he’s the Arts Editor for the Bay Area Reporter and lives in San Francisco.
