By the mid 90s the horror genre, and the slasher sub-genre in particular, had fallen into a deep rut of cliché and lazy straight-to-video sequels. But when Scream hit the multiplex, with its self-satirizing approach, combined with the twists and turns of a good murder mystery, plenty of blood, and no shortage of jump scares, audiences and critics fell back in love with the concept of teenagers being stalked by psychotic, knife wielding maniacs.

It turns out people just needed a little levity to bring life, (and death) back into the limp, lifeless body that was the slasher flick. Of course, casting known actresses of film and television fame like Drew Barrymore, Courtney Cox, and Neve Campbell didn’t hurt attendance numbers either. But what really sets Scream apart from its predecessors, (not to mention its many imitators) is its cheeky sense of humor, juxtaposed with the masterful sense of suspense and legitimate scares that veteran director, Wes Craven aptly delivered.
