Silents at the Senate - Metropolis (1927)
Please join us as the Detroit Theater Organ Society and the Senate Theater present Fritz Lang's German expressionist science fiction classic METROPOLIS, with live organ accompaniment by Scott Smith.
Made during the Wiemar period, Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia. The film follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city master, and Maria, a saintly figure to the workers, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes in their city and bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the city master.
Met with mixed reception upon release, Metropolis is now lauded for its powerful imagery, beautiful set design, and complex special effects. For decades only incomplete versions of the film were available. Then, in 2008, a damaged print of Lang's original cut of the film was found in a museum in Argentina. After a long restoration process that required additional materials provided by a print from New Zealand, the film was 95% restored to Lang's original vision.
Don’t miss your chance to see this all-time classic in its most authentic form, the way audiences first witnessed it back in 1927, in a theater with live organ accompaniment.
