REPLAY: The Joe Brooks Quartet (05/08/21)

Featuring Brooks and his jazz quartet featuring Bart Roderick, Don Kinney & Jeff Norwood

The Joe Brooks Quartet dishes up tasty combinations of jazz standards and originals in a style best described as classic jazz with a look back to when jazz was the dance music of America. While most often heard as a classical clarinetist and saxophonist, Joseph Brooks has been active in the jazz field for nearly 40 years. He has been a member of numerous jazz ensembles such as The Jazz Connection, The Denton Jazz Machine, The A Train Express, and The David Livingston Quintet to mention a few. Currently, Brooks is the professor of saxophone and clarinet at Central Washington University. His album “Dancing With Miss Sassy” is available at all CD and downloading platforms. 

Jeff Norwood is the Instrumental Music Director at Yakima Valley Community College. A doctoral candidate at the University of Washington, Jeff has played jazz and classical music professionally with too many ensembles to mention. 

Originally from New Mexico, drummer Don Kinney began his musical career with a jazz trio that performed in Chicago, Houston and San Francisco. Later, he became the principal percussionist with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and he played drums in a band that backed performers such as Della Reese, Diane Carroll, and The Supremes. He interrupted his musical career to attend law school and recently retired from practicing law in Yakima, WA. Don is a percussionist with the Yakima Symphony and performs regularly with a variety of big bands and jazz combos. Recent engagements include performances with fellow New Mexican Bobby Shew and with Jack Brownlow and Jeff Johnson at Seattle’s Jazz Alley. 

Pianist Bart Roderick, graduate of Central Washington University, has been teaching music in Yakima area schools for more than 25 years. His remarkable versatility as a keyboardist and vocalist has led him to professional work as an accompanist and musical director for Yakima theater productions, choirs, and with numerous artists around the world. His CD “Under The Sun” is available on all commercial platforms.
