PROGRAM

Alexander Borodin, String Quartet #2, Borodin was san illegitimate child of Georgian nobility dismissed and hidden by his family.  Doctor and chemist by profession, Borodin composed as an "amateur" to fill his spare time.

Ludwig Van Beethoven, String Quartet #13, Op 130 and Grosse Fuge, Op 133. Beethoven was a student of the original "father of the string quartet," Josef Haydn, and his necessity to express his reality led to the reinvention of music as it was known. Frequently seen as too radical at the time, Beethoven's ability to take the breadth of human experience to musical form has made his music timeless and essential.

George Walker, Lyric for Strings, Walker was a musician who helped pave the way for many black Americans by being the first in many notable achievements including winning a Pulitzer Prize for composition, receiving a doctoral degree from Eastman School of Music, and performing with the Philadelphia Orchestra, just to name a few! Refusing to be contained in one musical style, Walker's music crosses the boundaries of western classical music, jazz, and church hymns.
